About Stephen Block

Biography

Stephen Block is a photographer and writer who grew up in Mitcham, an average working-class child born at the arsehole end of the twentieth century. He was partially educated at Tamworth Manor High School and Merton Technical College, before briefly performing as a bassist in a couple of long-forgotten bands.

"Block rejects any notion that he just died in your arms tonight. Instead, he’s sad to say, he must be on his way."

Twisting Paths

Along the way, he's worked in various jobs—from cafes and comic shops to betting shops and twenty years in a supermarket—teaching himself various ropes, avoiding various scrapes, and now finding himself as a struggling artist. His practice explores futility, ennui, walking and the loneliness of the long-distance swimmer. His work blends photography, poetry, and video to greater or lesser effect. He doesn’t always have a clue as to what he’s doing, but he's starting to realize that maybe nobody else does, either.
